How to buy bitcoin with a Lightning invoice (BOLT11)

Paste an invoice without an amount and Aureo pays it when your purchase completes.

Written by Tristan

You can have Aureo send the bitcoin from a purchase to a Lightning invoice instead of a saved address. Create an invoice without an amount in your wallet, paste it in Aureo and send your SPEI as usual. When the purchase completes, Aureo pays the invoice and the sats arrive in seconds. The invoice works for that one purchase only.

Before you start

  • Your identity verification (Tier 1) must be approved.

  • You need a default address saved in Aureo: an on-chain address or a Lightning Address. It is your backup. If Aureo can't pay the invoice, your bitcoin goes there. Aureo won't accept an invoice until you have one. See How to add or remove a Lightning or on-chain address.

  • You need a Lightning wallet that can create an invoice without an amount. Aureo sets the amount when it pays, because the exact amount of bitcoin is only known once your SPEI arrives.

Steps

  1. In your Lightning wallet, open Receive, leave the amount empty and create the invoice. Copy it. A Bitcoin invoice starts with lnbc.

  2. In Aureo, open the account menu and select Buy bitcoin. The first screen is Purchase destination.

  3. Tap Add address, then tap Paste. Aureo recognizes the invoice and shows a Bolt11 tag above the field.

  4. Read the yellow notice. It shows when the invoice expires and which default address Aureo will use if it can't pay the invoice. Tap Continue (one-time use).

  5. In Use only for this purchase?, tap Confirm.

  6. Enter the amount in pesos and tap Continue.

  7. On Review, check that Receive at shows Lightning invoice with the Temporary tag. Tap See SPEI instructions.

  8. Send the SPEI to your personal CLABE from a bank account in your name. Check I confirm the SPEI comes from a bank account in my name and tap Confirm sending.

  9. Aureo detects your transfer, usually within minutes. It then buys the bitcoin and pays the invoice over Lightning, which takes seconds. The order shows Bitcoin delivered when it's done, and View details shows the Payment hash as proof of payment.

  10. Open your wallet. The sats arrive in the wallet that created the invoice.

Paste the invoice. The notice shows its expiry and your backup address.

On Review, the destination reads Lightning invoice with the Temporary tag.

The order shows Bitcoin delivered once Aureo pays the invoice.

How invoice expiry works

  • When you paste the invoice, it must stay valid for at least 60 more minutes. Aureo checks this once, when you paste it.

  • Aureo pays the invoice after your SPEI arrives and the purchase completes. If the invoice has expired by then, or the Lightning payment can't go through, Aureo sends your bitcoin to your default address instead. The order page then says: We couldn't use your one-time Lightning invoice, so we sent your bitcoin to your default destination address.

  • Aureo uses the default address you have when it pays. If you change your default after confirming the invoice, the backup changes too.

  • If the payment fails for another reason, the order shows Processing while the Aureo team reviews it. You don't need to do anything.

  • Send your SPEI right after you confirm. If your wallet lets you choose how long the invoice lasts, pick a few hours or more.

Fixing common errors

Aureo checks the invoice as you paste it and shows the problem under the field. Nothing gets saved, so you can paste a new invoice right away.

  • This Lightning invoice includes an amount. Please use an invoice without an amount. Create a new invoice and leave the amount empty.

  • This Lightning invoice is expired or expires too soon. Please generate a new one that stays valid for at least 60 more minutes. Create a new invoice. If your wallet lets you set the expiry, choose more than one hour.

  • This Lightning invoice is for a different network. The invoice comes from a test network wallet. Use a wallet on the Bitcoin main network. Its invoices start with lnbc.

  • Invalid Lightning invoice. Please check and try again. Part of the invoice is missing. Copy it again with your wallet's copy button instead of selecting the text by hand.

  • If what you pasted starts with lightning:, delete that prefix so the invoice starts with lnbc.

  • Lightning invoices expire, and we may not be able to pay yours. We need a default Bitcoin or Lightning address (LNURL) as a backup. You don't have a default address yet. Clear the field, save a default address, then paste the invoice again.

  • If the button on Review stays disabled for a purchase through the OTC desk, that is expected. Invoices don't work with OTC desk purchases. Choose a saved address instead.

Good to know

  • The invoice is for one purchase only. Aureo doesn't save it, and your next purchase goes to your default address again.

  • You can't save an invoice in My addresses or use one with Direct to Wallet, because invoices expire. For a Lightning destination you can reuse, save a Lightning Address.

  • Fees and purchase limits are the same as for any other purchase.
